Plant based eating is on the rise with increasing number of Brits choosing to follow a vegan diet and lifestyle. Now over half of Brits adopt vegan buying behaviour, according to the Vegan Society. 

Innova Market Research shows that in 2019 in the UK there have been 75% more new products launched with Vegan claims compared to 2014. Additionally, new launches in the Sweet Bakery and Desserts category have increased with 64% in 2019 compared to 2014.

The vegan trend is also widely featured and boosted by online communities and social media channels. Google searches for Vegan and Vegan Bakery have exponentially grown over the years and there are a variety of celebrities that are supporting and promoting this lifestyle and diet. 

To help bakers meet the growing demand for vegan products, Dawn Foods has launched a range of easy to use Vegan Creme Cake Mixes, available in chocolate and plain flavours.  

The creme mixes are recognised by the European Vegetarian Union and carry the V-Label- internationally acknowledged symbol for labelling vegan and vegetarian products and ingredients. As well as their vegan credentials, Dawn’s new mixes feature sustainable ingredients. The chocolate vegan mix is made with UTZ certified cocoa and neither mix contains palm oil.

There are benefits to having vegan offering in the bakery that go beyond meeting the demand from vegan consumers. Sweet bakes made with vegan mixes can appeal to a variety of diets like: vegetarian, vegan and flexitarians, or even to people that do not follow a specific diet.

Vegan Chocolate Layer Cake

Mix 500d water, 200g vegetable oil and 1000g Dawn Vegan Chocolate Crème Cake Mix in a bowl fitted with a flat beater for 1 minute on slow and 3 minutes on medium speed. Fill into ring forms and bake for 40-45 minutes at 180 ºC - 190ºC depending on oven.

Avocado Frosting

Whip 500g avocado and 50g lemon juice to puree, add 200g powder sugar, 200g vegetable margarine and mix up with a whisk until smooth.

Sandwich 3 Chocolate Cake layers with Avocado Frosting and then cover the top  of the cake. You can put a little bit on the sides or leave as is to achieve a ‘naked cake’ effect and finish off with sliced avocado and chocolate decoration.
