STORY: A heartwarming story from The Worshipful Company of Bakers

A letter received by the Clerk of The Worshipful Company of Bakers

Dear Mr Whitehouse,

I am Tony Dowden and I was the Chief Internal Auditor of the City of London Corporation from 1982 until 2010. In my time in the Chamberlain’s department of the Corporation I used to assist the Remembrancer at major state functions and I also occasionally acted as a stand-in to the Clerk to the Chamberlain’s Court to conduct Freedom ceremonies.

I am therefore familiar with the workings of the City and its Guilds. With that in mind I thought you might be interested in the recent activities of a “young baker”. My niece, Charlotte Gurney (also a Freeman of the City) has an eleven year-old son Harrison.

Harry is well known in my family for being a thoughtful and caring boy. Recently, after his Mum’s return from hospital with Coronavirus he had an idea how he could help vulnerable people in his area. I set out below some details of what he has been up to.

This is Charlotte’s comment on recovering after a spell in hospital with Covid 19:- “Things are back to COVID normal in our house thankfully. I’m back to being able to drink a glass of bubbles (hurrah) and Harry has been keeping himself busy.

"He’s been calling flour mills in the UK as he wanted to bake bread for his elderly and vulnerable neighbours and family, and asking if they would they sell him a sack. He’s now had sacks and yeast donated from three mills and has a little bread factory set up at home. Let us know if you know anyone locally that would like a loaf and a note from the children.”
