Yorkshire bakery and café chain Merrie England has closed its doors after 60 years in business, ending the story of a much-loved regional brand that has been part of communities across West Yorkshire for generations.
Established in 1966 by Keith and Anita Hanselman, the family business grew from a single coffee shop into a well-known chain of cafés with locations in Huddersfield, Brighouse and Halifax, supported by its own bakery producing a wide range of cakes, pastries, breads and savoury products.
Over the years, Merrie England became recognised for its traditional bakery offering, serving freshly baked scones, cakes, sandwiches and hot drinks to thousands of loyal customers. The business also expanded with a drive-thru café as it adapted to changing consumer habits.
The company has now ceased trading after facing a combination of financial pressures, including rising operating costs, increased energy bills, higher staffing expenses and reduced consumer spending. Despite efforts to secure the future of the business under new ownership, challenging market conditions ultimately proved too difficult to overcome.
The closure marks the end of one of Yorkshire's longest-established independent bakery and café operators, leaving behind a legacy built on quality baking, family values and strong community connections.
The company's assets are expected to be marketed for sale, raising the possibility that parts of the business or the Merrie England brand could continue under new ownership.
