STORY: Grupo Bimbo UK acquires Mr Bagels

The world’s largest bakery business, Mexico-based Grupo Bimbo, has bought Hertfordshire-based Mr Bagels.

The deal happened back in August, but has only now been revealed by the Birmingham-based advisory firm for the transaction, Gateley.

The acquisition is part of plans to expand in Europe, according to a statement released by the group. It already owns the New York Bakery Co, a UK business started by American Broney Gadman.

Mr Bagels currently employs 60 people, but it is expected this deal will create more jobs. The business is present in foodservice channels and supplies private label customers across Europe.

Cliff Irwin, managing director of Grupo Bimbo UK, said: “The sector is doing well and consumer demand for bagels continues to rise, particularly in Europe. Our intention is to further invest in the Mr Bagels site to increase its capacity and product range as the UK and European bagel markets continue to grow.”
