As we roll into autumn and all the seasonal fun that comes with it, we are still seeing some beautiful late summer days – the sun is shining as I write and is reminding me that it actually has been quite the summer!

Heatwaves, droughts and hose-pipe bans have affected us all, not to mention that only a couple of months ago we were celebrating the Queens’s Platinum Jubilee and watching the amazing bakery tributes unfold.  

How strange it is to think that in such a short space of time, the country is now a very different place with the sad passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

But once again, the bakery industry has stepped up with some amazing tributes, not only to celebrate the life of our Queen but also to celebrate the start of a new era with King Charles III. We have our own little tribute to the Queen’s reign from our Crafty Baker on page 35.

With autumn almost upon us, we know that that bakers will not only be prepping for Halloween but also forward planning for Christmas – which will indeed be upon us before we know it, so please head over to page 18 to read our Christmas feature talking about trends past and present.

Equally with the change in season comes harvest. Sophie Braker talks about the effect of crop change on your bakes from page 32, and we would be very interested to hear how you deal with the changes that harvest brings to your business.

Last week I attended the Worshipful Company of Bakers’ Student training event at British Bakels. Fourteen bakery students were lucky enough to be invited to Bakels’ test bakery in Bicester for three days of insight and experience. We will be running more about this fantastic event and the opportunities it provides in our next issue.

This month we have the BSB Autumn Conference to look forward to. For more details on the conference programme, along with the information on how you can attend – turn to page 42.
