FEDIMA ROADMAP TO STRENGTH EU BAKERY INGREDIENTS SECTOR

Fedima Presents Roadmap for EU Policymakers to Strengthen Europe’s Bakery Ingredients Industry

Brussels, February 10, 2025 – Fedima, the federation representing European bakery ingredients manufacturers, has introduced its manifesto outlining key policy recommendations for the 2024-2029 EU legislative cycle. The document serves as a strategic roadmap to foster innovation, sustainable growth, and competitiveness within the bakery sector.

In an effort to support the bakery, confectionery, and patisserie industries across Europe, Fedima has identified seven essential policy priorities that address the sector’s most pressing needs:

  1. A Supportive Regulatory Framework – Establishing policies that encourage innovation and sustainable economic growth in the food industry, ensuring timely market entry for safe and sustainable technologies and products.

  2. Recognition of Bread and Pastry’s Role – Emphasizing the cultural, nutritional, and emotional significance of bread and pastry in European diets while promoting product advancements that align with evolving consumer preferences.

  3. Clearer B2C Policy Guidelines for B2B – Enhancing legal certainty and improving supply-chain collaboration by clarifying the application of consumer-oriented policies to business-to-business operations.

  4. Science-Based Regulations – Ensuring that science remains the foundation of regulatory frameworks impacting the food industry.

  5. Addressing Regulatory Disparities – Eliminating inconsistencies across EU member states to enhance the internal food market’s efficiency, benefiting both businesses and consumers.

  6. Harmonized Sustainability Regulations – Implementing balanced, innovation-driven sustainability policies without imposing undue burdens on businesses.

  7. Proactive Food Security Strategies – Strengthening climate adaptation efforts within agriculture and the broader food supply chain to mitigate food security risks.

A Vision for a Resilient and Competitive Bakery Sector

Fedima President, Thomas Lesaffre, stated: “Our recommendations provide a clear pathway for EU policymakers to support the sustainable growth and competitiveness of the European bakery sector. Bread and pastries are at the heart of European culinary traditions and play a vital role in daily diets. This manifesto aims to ensure that the regulatory environment enables bakery ingredients producers to innovate and thrive while contributing to a sustainable and resilient food system.”

Representing the interests of bakery ingredients producers across 13 European countries, Fedima’s member companies employ nearly 27,000 individuals and generate an annual revenue of 7 billion euros. As the new EU legislative term begins, the manifesto will guide Fedima’s engagement with policymakers, advocating for a regulatory landscape that supports industry innovation and long-term sustainability.

Lesaffre concluded: “Collaboration between industry stakeholders and policymakers is essential to addressing challenges such as climate resilience, sustainability, and regulatory consistency. Our sector is ready to contribute to shaping policies that foster innovation, benefit consumers, and strengthen the European economy during this legislative cycle and beyond.”
