STORY: New category for Tiptree World Bread Awards

The Tiptree World Bread Awards has just announced a new category: ‘Best Restaurant or Gastro Pub Bread’.

Matthews Cotswold Flour is sponsoring the award, which “celebrates the renaissance of freshly baked bread and flour provenance in British pubs and restaurants” according to Tiptree.

Online applications need to be made by 4th September, and their fresh bread must be delivered to Westminster Cathedral Hall in London on 26th September.

Bertie Matthews was the driving force behind this new category. He is the sixth generation of his family to run the flour mill at Shipton under Wychwood.

He says: “Handmade, freshly baked bread sets the tone about the quality of your food and service to follow. It’s a sign that you’re offering authentic, fresh food using the best ingredients. The quality round us in the Cotswolds is amazing now and I want to salute the heroes who are serving fresh bread every day and encourage more of it”.

“We use only the highest quality, tested grains in our flour and still follow the most uncomplicated approach to milling in an un-airconditioned, natural environment, which really does make a difference to the success of a bake.”

Mark Woodgate won silver and bronze in 2018 for his sourdough and chia seed loaves made using Cotswold Flour. He says winning the award quite literally changed his life: “It was completely inspiring and made our business” he said.

Mark tried twenty different flours and found that Matthews Cotswold Flour gave him the best, most consistent loaf.  Two years ago Mark was baking three loaves a day at home. Now he has his own business, Marks’ Cotswold Bakery, supplying some of the finest gastro pubs in the Cotswolds including The Plough in Kingham and the Chequers in Churchill.

“Making top quality bread is an art form and I want to celebrate and support everyone who does it. Plus encourage them to use the finest flour of course” Bertie said.

Online entry submissions cost £15 and can be made at www.worldbreadawards.com. Bread, fully baked and ready to eat should be delivered by 1pm on Thursday 26 September 2019 to Westminster Cathedral Hall, Ambrosden Avenue, London SW1P 1QG.

In addition to the good publicity and hallmark of “Best restaurant and gastro pub bread’ World Award, Matthews Cotswold Flour is also offering other rewards for taking part and celebrating good bread.

Customers who nominate a pub or restaurant with great bread will be entered into a prize draw to win £150 for a meal out (bread included, of course!)

The winning restaurant or pub will also receive two free 16kg bag of flour of their choice from Matthews Cotswold Flour, plus free press release distribution from its PR agency.
