STORY: Federation of Bakers launches new advice on bread in association with the British Nutrition Foundation

A new updated review has been launched by the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) today, which outlines the role bread (including white, wholemeal, brown and wheat germ) plays in the UK diet.

The review was supported by The Federation of Bakers (FOB) - this is part of a wider piece of activity from FOB, which aims to remind consumers and health care professionals about the nutritional value of bread.

The proactive campaign comes at a time when consumer demand for wrapped and sliced bread is at an all-time high, with it increasing as much as 50% during the health crisis. This growth reinforces the value of bread and its position as one of the nation’s favourite staple foods.

The updated BNF review considers the contribution of bread (including white, wholemeal, brown and wheat germ) to nutrient intakes, the biological effects of different components of bread and the health claims related to these, as well as exploring future trends for bread. The partnership with the British Dietetic Association (BDA) is promoting the positive messages around bread to the BDA’s network of 9,000 food and nutrition professionals through its Healthier You initiative. This partnership will also allow FOB to disseminate the benefits of bread to a million people committed to making positive changes to their diet and lifestyle.

Gordon Polson, Chief Executive of the Federation of Bakers, said:“With bread playing an important part in a healthy balanced diet and no more so than during a time like this, it is vital that we educate people about the range of nutrients all bread delivers. The BNF review re-affirms bread’s place as one of the UK’s favourite staple foods and is an excellent reminder of the value of bread, particularly wholegrain bread, to our diet.”
